For the last eight months I’ve been dealing with some neck issues. About two weeks ago, the issue started getting worse. I started having numbness in my right hand and feeling really sharp pains at different pressure points on my arms. It’s been making it really hard for me to sleep. I can’t lay on that right shoulder and I have a hard time even laying on my back.
The other day, I went and visited an orthopedic surgeon. I had done some tests and I was expecting that he was going to tell me I had a herniated or ruptured disc in my neck, and that I had to replace that desk. But, the news he gave me was actually a lot worse. He said that my neck is so far gone that he can’t even do that. So, he’s doing another course of treatment where I will probably have to have some vertebrae in my neck fused.
As I was driving home and sharing this news with my wife. She asked me, “How do you feel about this?” I thought about it for a second and I said, “I feel like a learner.” I felt challenged. I felt like I wanted to go learn everything I could about this type of health condition. I decided I would do everything in my power to change the trajectory of my course.
This is the positive energy I want to talk about today. Instead of dwelling on my somewhat untreatable condition, I focused on what I could do to learn about and change the situation.
I recently attended a conference where Tony Robbins spoke. He got me thinking about this idea of having positive energy and taught me a lot of these principles. One of the concepts that he taught related to positive energy was the concept about constant progress. This is the idea that reaching the end destination is often not what leads to happiness.
Many people focus on their end goal. They want to earn their degree or they want to sell a business. But, once they reach those huge goals, they want more. They don’t feel fulfilled. Tony’s point was that happiness comes from the progress and the improvement along the journey, not necessarily the end result. If we can adjust the way we look at life and focus on the small improvements and positive aspects, our lives, businesses, and relationships will improve.
In physics, there’s a law of energy. Energy transfers from one object to another, sometimes transforming the object. Think about two vehicles. If a car that’s driving fast hits another car parked on the road, that car will move. That’s the energy being transferred. If that car is hit hard enough, it’s also going to transform. You’re going to have a destroyed or damaged vehicle.
The same thing is true in our businesses, in our teams, and in our relationships. As we bring positive energy, it can transfer to the other people that we come into contact with. The more positive we are, generally the more positive the outcome when we have these relationships in our interactions with other people.
How to Have Positive Energy
So how do we have more positive energy? The first thing we can do is have more courage. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
We shouldn’t get discouraged by our short term failures or our short term discouragements and bad health news. We need to move forward and do what we can to progress and improve. We can’t let our fear hold us back. Remember, courage is not the absence of fear; courage is feeling fear but choosing to move forward anyway.
The second thing we can do to have more positive energy is to have focus. Tony Robbins says, “Where focus goes, energy flows.”
I was once working to start a new business and in my mind I was ruminating on all the negative outcomes that could happen. I didn’t want my family to suffer in that situation. Aa I was talking to my wife about it, she told me to stop. She told me that I needed to focus on where I want to go instead of focusing on where I don’t want to go. Like Tony Robbins says, where focus goes, energy flows. I need to stop focusing on the negative outcomes, and I need to put my energy on the positive outcomes where I want to go. As I put more energy towards what I want, I will be much more likely to achieve it.
Tony Robbins also said, “Identify your problems, but give your power and energy to solutions.” We shouldn’t ignore the problems, but we shouldn’t focus on them. We simply want to identify the problems so we can then put all our focus on the solutions. The problems will paralyze us; the solutions will energize us.
Finally, the third thing we can do to have more positive energy, is to have more drive. Madame CJ Walker said, “Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up, and make them happen.”
Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:
- If we can focus on the small improvements and positive aspects of our daily lives, our businesses and relationships will improve.
- We will find more fulfillment when we focus on the journey instead of just the final outcome.
- Our energy can be transferred to others.
- To have more positive energy we should have courage and drive, and give power to solutions, not problems.
